Course Description:

An introduction to using mathematics in order to model real world situations.

Course Objective:

The purpose of this class is to help the student to become accustomed to using mathematics in order to model real world situations.  In order to accomplish this goal I will be your guide, but you will do the work.  You are responsible for how well you learn in this class, and what you take out of it.  I will assist you in whatever way I can.  However, you are the one in charge of your education.  I am looking forward to the opportunity to serve you in your search through the world of mathematics.  If you would like my assistance outside of class, feel free to stop by my office at any time.  However, probably the easiest way to get in touch with me is by the use of email to set up a time when we can meet.

Other Sources of Assistance:

Mathlab:  Help from Grad students
        M-R 10:00-5:00  and   F  10:00-3:00   in South Hall 1607

Course Requirements:

Homework:

Corresponding with each day's class, there will be homework assigned out of the textbook which will be due as specified in the class schedule by the end of office hours.  I will have a solutions manual for the homework available during my office hour each day so that you will always be able to check your work before you turn it in.  So this should be an easy way to raise your grade.

Projects:

There will be two projects during the quarter that we will be working on to supplement the textbook.  The first will be assigned on 7/10 and due on 7/16.  The second will be assigned on 7/20 and due 7/26.  Each project will involve a report to be type-written and use proper grammar and spelling.

Tests:

There will be three exams throughout the quarter.

Exam Sections Covered Date
1  1.1-1.3, 2.1-2.3, 3.1-3.4, 5.1-5.5, 9.1, 9.3-9.6 July 11

Note: Tests must be taken at the scheduled time unless special arrangements are made with the instructor BEFORE the test.  NO late work of any kind will be accepted.

Calculators:

Calculators with trig and log functions on them will be needed for the work in class and the homework for this class.  Having a graphing calculator may be useful at times, but is not required.

Note:  Calculators will not be allowed during exams.
