Professional Development at the University of California, Santa Barbara

Teaching Portfolio and CCUT

By putting together the teaching portfolio I was able to reflect on my experiences as a teacher and student at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and to learn from them. I realized how much I have accomplished in the past few years and how I have developed professionally as a teacher. While I had already written my teaching philosophy statements prior to assembling the portfolio, I noticed how they have evolved from my experiences as a teacher and from my coursework in pedagogy, in particular on foreign language instruction. Summarizing and reflecting on my professional development for each of the CCUT requirements, on my teaching goals and strategies, and on the feedback received from students and from my mentor has helped me to identify my strengths and weaknesses as a teacher. Overall, students see me as a well-organized, enthusiastic, and committed teacher. I am also very ambitious and try to cover all topics thoroughly, sometimes planning more than can be done in a quarter. Hence, I need to consider the students’ levels and adjust my teaching to fit their needs.

Creating this portfolio and completing the CCUT is a very useful experience for my job search process. Some of the positions I am currently applying for are asking for a teaching portfolio as part of the application package. I certainly would have been overwhelmed with that task without being involved in the CCUT.
