Future plans

Ever since I started the graduate program in linguistics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, I knew that I wanted a career in academia as a teacher and researcher. In the future, I hope to find a position where both, teaching and research, are equally valued. Ideally, I would like to combine the two by involving my students in my research projects and by studying and evaluating teaching methods and testing new technology used for pedagogical purposes. O ne of my major goals as a teacher/researcher is to connect teaching and research whenever possible.

During my graduate studies I have had many opportunities to teach a variety of courses, including ‘Linguistic Analysis’, a course focusing on the great variety of linguistic structures found in the world’s languages. Teaching first‑year German and Spanish language courses, I was able to put to use many of the concepts I have studied in second language acquisition and teaching with hypermedia. In my teaching capacities I have worked with undergraduates at all levels, taught both smaller (less than 20 students) and larger classes (up to 35 students), and mastered many teaching techniques through faculty guidance, mentorship, and teaching-related seminars. This practical experience along with completing all the requirements for the CCUT have contributed to my professional development as a teacher and have made me a strong candidate on the job market.

Currently, I am applying for different academic positions at major research universities and at smaller teaching universities. The CCUT, as well as assembling the teaching portfolio are very useful in this process. I am confident that my efforts in completing the CCUT and my teaching portfolio will show the various search committees my dedication to teaching and will make my application stand out from the rest.
