Congratulations Graduates!
The 2008 Graduate Division Commencement Ceremony will
be held on Sunday, June 15, at 4:00 PM, on the Faculty Club Green.
Students who have completed or will complete a graduate degree or credential between the period of Fall Quarter 2007 and before Fall Quarter 2008 are invited to participate.
Registration
To be included in the printed program, all graduate students must register by
Friday, May 2nd. Students may
still register to participate in the program after May 2nd, but their names may
not appear in the printed program.
Doctoral Candidate Instructions
- Inclusion of doctoral dissertation titles in the printed program is now closed.
- Doctoral candidates must secure the permission of their doctoral degree advisor(s) to participate in the Graduate Division ceremony
Graduate Division will use the information students provide to print "stage passes"
used to announce each student's name and major at
the ceremony, and, in the case of doctoral candidates, the name of the professor
hooding the student. Students will receive their stage passes when they check
in at the Events Center on the day of commencement.

Student Speaker Competition
Eligible graduate students may compete to be the student speaker at this year's
Graduate Division ceremony. More information and the application is available at

The deadline for submitting the application is Thursday, March 27, 2008.
Lancaster Dissertation Competition
The 2008 Lancaster dissertation competition is in the fields of Social Sciences and Mathematics/Physical Sciences/and Engineering. Doctoral candidates who have or will file their dissertations during the two-year period, July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2008, can be nominated by faculty for the competition as the best dissertation in their field. The winner receives a check for $1,000 and becomes UCSB's entry for the national CGSI dissertation competition. More information is

General Information

- For information on regalia rental and purchase as well as commencement memorabilia
and announcements, visit the
UCSB Bookstore.
- Renting Regalia. Students can rent cap with tassel, gown, and hood from the UCSB Bookstore Textbook Dept. between June 9-13, 8:00-5:00 and June 14 & 15, 8:00-4:00. The cost of renting complete master’s regalia is $42.45 (plus tax) and $43.45 (plus tax) for complete doctoral regalia. Size selection is best early in the week. Rented regalia must be returned at the end of the ceremony. If you have questions about regalia rental, call (805) 893-2330.
- Buying Regalia. Students may purchase part or all of their regalia from the UCSB Bookstore, but must do so by April 1, 2008, to allow time for delivery. Call (805) 893-2330. Doctoral hoods may be purchased at any time of the year for $109.00 (plus tax).
- Letter for Families of International Students. International
students may request an official "Letter of Invitation" to assist their parents
and family in obtaining a visa to attend the commencement ceremony. Contact the
Graduate Division
for details.
- Personalized and Generic Commencement Announcements. From March 3rd, students may order personalized commencement announcements from the UCSB Bookstore or online at the
UCSB Bookstore;
allow at least 7-10 days for delivery. Students may buy generic (non-personalized) announcements any time between March 3rd and June 15th.
- Souvenir Programs. Students may purchase commencement souvenir "books" containing
the names of degree candidates and doctoral candidate's dissertation or DMA
document titles for $8 each the week prior to commencement at the UCSB Bookstore,
and at the Commencement site on the day of the event. The smaller commencement "program" featuring
the order of events for the ceremony is free.
Seating and Parking
- Because we are the smallest of all the UCSB Commencement ceremonies, there will be no problem with inviting any number of people you wish. No tickets are required. We are also the last ceremony. The ceremony before ours will be leaving about 3:15pm, so you should tell your family and friends to plan their arrival accordingly. The earlier they arrive, the more congested the immediate area will be although parking will be easily available further from the site.
- There is a wonderful campus map for Commencement available online
- A small, tented area is provided for guests who are sun-sensitive, elderly, and/or disabled at the rear of the Green. Parking Service staff will direct commencement traffic; nearby parking will be available for persons with disabled placards or license plates.
- The UCSB Bookstore will be Broadcasting the 2008 Commencement ceremonies live on the Internet. Friends and family will be able to watch the ceremony from anywhere in the world. Go to UCSB Bookstore.
- Photographs and videos will be available from Chappell Studios , 800-424-3686.
- Hotel and Motel Reservations. The
Santa Barbara Conference and Visitor Bureau and Film Commission
has listings of accommodations in Santa Barbara. Reserve early as hotels and motels
fill up well in advance of commencement.
- Dinner after the Ceremony. Students and their families wishing
to eat at a local restaurant after the ceremony are urged to plan ahead, reserve
early; make reservations at 7:15 PM or later for Sunday night.
On the Day of Commencement

Plan to arrive with your regalia at the Events Center (ECen) between 2:45
and 3:00 PM

Tell friends and family to arrive at UCSB between 2:45 and 3:15 in order to find
parking and to get to the Faculty Club Green to be seated by 3:30.

Wear comfortable clothing and shoes and bring your sunglasses and sunscreen if you are sun sensitive. The walk
to the commencement site from the Events Center where the procession forms is approximately
one-quarter mile. The late-afternoon sun can be hot and the glare can be intense.

Doctoral candidates should travel to the Events Center with their professor or plan
where to meet at the Events Center.

Staff will help students and professors with their regalia and with the
line-up.

The processional leaves the Events Center at 3:30 PM; students and professors should
arrive early to allow time to use the restrooms, take care of regalia, line
up, etc.

The Events Center will be locked shortly after the procession leaves. Students should plan to leave their clothing and personal belongings with family, friends, or in their cars.

Students are asked to stay for the duration of the ceremony.

The ceremony should conclude by 6:15 PM.

After the ceremony is completed, return rented regalia to the visible collection center close to the event.
