ABOUT AGEP
The NSF AGEP program at UC Santa Barbara is administered by the UCSB Graduate Division and the Colleges of Science and Engineering, who work in concert to support successful graduate admissions, and to facilitate networking and mentorship relationships within departments and disciplines. UCSB NSF AGEP is a member in an alliance among the ten campuses of the University of California and the NSF. The goal of this partnership is to increase the number of underrepresented minority students who acquire doctoral degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and ultimately enter the professoriate.
Though the UCSB Graduate Division Office of Diversity, Recruitment, and Retention works to support diversity of all kinds (including race, class, gender, and physical ability), NSF AGEP particularly focuses on supporting groups that have been historically underrepresented in STEM disciplines: African Americans, Alaskan Natives, American Indians, Hispanic Americans and Native Pacific Islanders.
AGEP Activities:
- The Graduate Research Internship Program (GRIP), an eight-week, faculty-mentored research program for students in master's programs and advanced doctoral students seeking postdoctoral opportunities.
- Partnerships with California State Universities, Hispanic-Serving Institutions and Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
- Professional development seminars, interdisciplinary opportunities, and support for student-initiated community-building efforts.
- Full-time Diversity Coordinators who work closely with the divisional deans, faculty, administrators and students on recruitment, admissions, advising, retention and advocacy.
- Graduate diversity peer advocates who assist in maintaining an environment that fosters graduate student diversity.
