Program Goal
The goal of the ARC (Academic Research Consortium) is to prepare and encourage talented undergraduate students from educationally disadvantaged and diverse backgrounds to apply to UC Ph.D. programs. ARC is not intended for students seeking medical, law, business, or other professional degrees.
ARC is an eight-week summer research program conducted through the UCSB Graduate Division for undergraduates just completing their junior year and CSU Pre-Doctoral Scholars in Social Sciences, Humanities, Science, Engineering, and Mathematics fields. ARC participants are assigned to assist on graduate-level research projects with a UCSB Faculty member. Beyond simply engaging in research, however, ARC participants are involved in various activities which are designed to develop the skills necessary for success at the graduate level, from funding workshops and a writing class, to GRE prep and career guidance. Other workshops include Graduate Admissions, Finding Balance in Graduate Education, and Cultural Diversity and Sensitivity.
The ARC program covers basic expenses. Participants receive a stipend to offset summer earnings, food allowance, free summer housing in a UCSB owned apartment, and books and supply expenses.
