Academic Ranking of World Universities

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) are derived from a list of over 1,000 institutions compiled by the Center for World-Class Universities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The rankings are based on broad disciplinary groupings and secondary data sources that primarily focus on universities’ achievements in scientific research such as the number of Nobel prizes and Fields medals won by staff and alumni, the number of highly cited researchers on staff, and the number of articles by faculty published in Nature and Science magazines.

As of the 2013 rankings, UCSB was ranked 35th in the world. Additionally, the ARWU ranks UCSB 27th in comparison to all other American institutions. The sciences play a large part in the ARWU rankings, and UCSB has consistently scored very strongly in these areas, ranking 6th internationally for Engineering/Technology and Computer Science and 19th for Natural Sciences and Mathematics in 2012. The UCSB Physics Department is ranked as 12th in the world.
