Completed FAFSA Required to Receive Student AidTo be considered for student aid at UCSB, domestic graduate students must complete and submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is used to compile a need analysis used in the determination of all financial support packages at UCSB. Although Graduate Division fellowships are primarily merit-based, Graduate Division frequently uses need-based monies to fund merit-based awards to graduate students. A completed FAFSA is required of all domestic students who wish to be considered for any need-based aid administered through the UCSB Financial Aid Office. Students must submit the FAFSA by the March 2, 1999, deadline to be considered for aid for the 1999–2000 academic year. In addition to completing a FAFSA, the Financial Aid Office frequently asks students to provide supplemental information—e.g., copies of tax returns—in order to complete a need analysis. Graduate students are encouraged to work closely with the Financial Aid Office to ensure that all required documents are received by the stated deadlines; this will help increase the likelihood that you receive notification of your financial aid award—and the award itself—in a timely manner. |

How to Get Your Stipend Check if You are Not in Santa BarbaraStudents who receive stipend checks as part of a fellowship package must pick up those checks directly from the Billing Office. Occasionally, students who receive stipend payments are not in the Santa Barbara area when the checks are prepared and available for disbursement. If this situation happens to you, the following arrangements can be made with the Billing Office. First, it is important to know that the Billing Office cannot disburse checks to anyone other than the person indicated on the check. So, you cannot have a friend pick it up for you. However, with your authorization, you can have the Billing Office mail the check to a specific address. You can then make independent arrangements for the handling of that check, according to your wishes. If you are not in the Santa Barbara area the Billing Office can mail your check to any address you choose, if you follow these simple steps: Write a letter to: Billing/Accounts Receivable, 1212 SAASB, University of California, Santa Barbara, CA 93106 In the letter include: your full name, perm number, social security number, and the address to which you would like the check mailed. Include the name of the fellowship for which the stipend check has been prepared. If you will be receiving quarterly disbursements, please indicate that as well. You must sign and date the letter. The Billing Office must have your original signature before they can mail your check. Therefore, they cannot accept Faxed letters. Enclose a photocopy of a picture ID (driver's license or UCSB student ID card). As a reminder, before your check can be disbursed to you, or mailed to the address of your choice, there are three very important criteria that must be met: 1) you must be registered in courses for the quarter in which the check has been prepared, 2) your fees must be paid (either by you or your fellowship) for that quarter, and 3) your Billing/Accounts Receivable (BA/RC) account must be clear of all other charges due. |
