Postdoctoral Scholars
Postdoctoral Scholars at the University of California, Santa Barbara
UCSB hosts nearly 300 postdoctoral scholars each year as they pursue further research training in the sciences, engineering disciplines, social sciences, and the humanities. In the past several decades, UCSB has earned a reputation as a distinguished research and teaching institution and is one of only 62 research-intensive universities elected to membership in the prestigious Association of American Universities. Our faculty includes five Nobel Prize winners and scores of elected members of national and international academies and societies, as well as dozens of winners of prestigious national awards.
UCSB is home to eleven national centers and institutes, eight of which are sponsored by the National Science Foundation, including the Materials Research Laboratory, the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, the Southern California Earthquake Center, and the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics. Other centers and institutes engaging significant numbers of postdoctoral scholars in advanced research include:
- California Nanosystems Institute (in collaboration with UCLA)
- Center for Polymers and Organic Solids
- Institute for Collaborative Biotechnologies
- Institute for Quantum and Complex Dynamics
- Marine Science Institute
- Mitsubishi Chemical Center for Advanced Materials
- Neuroscience Research Institute
Especially active as well with postdoctoral research are the departments of:
- Chemical Engineering
- Electrical and Computer Engineering
- Materials Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology
- Physics
- Psychology
Postdoctoral scholars find a highly collaborative, and often interdisciplinary, array of advanced research endeavors at UCSB.
