Classics Graduate Degree Program

Description
The Department of Classics is renowned for the excellence of its philological training, and its graduate program combines in-depth study of ancient languages and texts with expert training in a wide range of ancillary fields. The department offers two closely related graduate programs: the M.A./Ph.D. program for students who have completed the B.A., and the Ph.D. program for those who come to UCSB with an M.A. in Classics from another institution. In addition to the M.A. and Ph.D. in Classics, we offer an Emphasis (M.A. and Ph.D.) in Ancient History and an Emphasis (M.A. and Ph.D.) in Literature and Theory. Successful completion of these degree programs demands a high degree of competency in both ancient Greek and Latin languages. Applicants to the program should show a minimum of five years’ training in these languages, with at least three years in the stronger language. Modern foreign language(s) for research will be required for degree(s). For further information about the graduate program, see the department web page.
