Guide to Filing Theses and Dissertations (Condensed)
While students are urged to read the revised UCSB Guide to Filing Theses and Dissertations in its entirety, students may find the summary information contained in these links helpful in expediting the degree completion and filing processes:
- Completing Your Graduate Degree
- Recommendations for a Smoother Filing Process
- Checklist of Formatting and Filing Standards
The revised filing guide was approved by Graduate Council on June 7, 2004, effective Fall quarter 2004. Formatting of theses, and dissertations must conform to the guidelines presented in this revised document.
An important change in the revised guide is that students now have an option to file one electronic copy of their dissertations. Graduate Division is open for accepting UCSB theses and dissertations Monday through Friday, 9 AM to noon and 1 PM to 4 PM. The filing guide is available in PDF form.
Sample Dissertation
A sample dissertation, including preliminary pages, body text with figures, references, and appendix, is available in downloadable PDF or Word for Windows format. If you do not have Acrobat Reader, you can download a free copy from Adobe's web site.
Dissertation/Thesis Requirements
The thesis or dissertation title page must have the last month of the quarter and year in which the degree is to be awarded. For example, if one is graduating Fall quarter 2004, one would print December 2004 on the title page. The full date is unnecessary, but if one chooses to include the day, it will be the deadline date noted in the Schedule of Classes.
The date on the signature page must be the month and year in which the committee members sign - these signatures indicate their review and acceptance of the entire document.
