Message from the Dean
Dean's Welcome
![]() |
I would like to extend a warm welcome to all prospective applicants to UCSB’s graduate programs. Graduate students at UCSB are actively engaged in research, scholarship, and teaching in 45 programs in the disciplines of science, engineering, humanities, arts, social sciences, environmental science and education.
Our world class faculty offer the highest quality of educational and research opportunities. UCSB is home to 5 Nobel Prize winners and many elected members or fellows of the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences (23), the National Academy of Sciences (26), the National Academy of Engineering (27), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (38). It is home to 12 national centers and institutes with over $160 million dollars in research funding on campus overall.
With this rich array of faculty and opportunities for engagement in research and scholarly activity, UCSB takes pride in its tradition of interdisciplinarity. Today's world demands an educated populace that can communicate effectively across disciplinary, national and global borders. It demands innovation that will come only from knowledge, skills and cultural awareness applied to global contexts, problems, and solutions.
This year, we are pleased to announce the opening of San Clemente Villages – the first UCSB campus housing facility designed specifically for single graduate students. San Clemente Villages will open its doors to graduate students in Fall 2008. This facility will offer graduate students the opportunity to live in a vibrant academic community, adjacent to campus which includes three outdoor community spaces as well as recreational, meeting, laundry, and study areas. More information may be found about San Clemente at the following website: San Clemente Villages
It is the vision of the Graduate Division that all graduate students will thrive in the rich context of academic opportunities at UCSB. We strive to ensure that all graduate students will make timely progress through their degree program and leave UCSB to become national and international leaders in their fields. The Graduate Division is committed to excellence in research, diversity, and intellectual innovation in UCSB graduate education.
Please visit our university community. We look forward to welcoming you and working with you in your pursuit of academic excellence.
Sincerely,
Gale M. Morrison
Dean, Graduate Division
