The steps below outline the departmental application process, which occurs in the sophomore or junior year, depending on the department.

  1. Speak with your prospective department about requirements and program application instructions.
  2. File an internal application directly with your department of interest. The department will notify you if you are accepted into the five-year program.
  3. At the beginning of the quarter before you intend to advance to graduate standing meet with your department about instructions for completing the Advancement Request Memo and Curriculum Memo with the appropriate college (For example, if you plan to advance fall 2017, you will need to contact your department early spring 2017).
  4. After completing the required memos with your college and receiving approval and instructions to do so from the Graduate Division, complete the Online Graduate Application in order to advance to graduate standing. When completing the Online Graduate Application, you may not need to provide materials that you have already given to the department as part of the internal application process. Coordinate with the Graduate Program Assistant (GPA) in your department to ensure that materials are uploaded to your online application.

Students applying to 5-year programs do not need to pay the Graduate Division's application fee. You must e-mail the Assistant Director of Graduate Admissions to notify her when you submit your application. Copy the departmental Graduate Program Assistant (GPA) on your e-mail.

The online application fee will then be waived and your online application will be available to the department. The department will provide us with materials to process your application and you will be advanced to graduate standing for the quarter listed in your Advancement Memo. To officially accept your offer of admission to the graduate program, you must submit the online Statement of Intent to Register (SIR), located within your online application.
