Step 2: Application Instructions

Applications

Only one application may be submitted per application cycle. Simultaneous applications are not accepted.

Non-Refundable Application Fee

A non-refundable application fee must accompany the application. The application fee is:

  • seventy dollars ($70.00) for domestic applicants
  • ninety dollars ($90.00) for international applicants

Application fees can be paid online by using a Visa, Mastercard, check, or international money order. Credit cards may only be used online during the application process and cannot be used after your application has been submitted. If paying by check or money order, please ensure that your full name appears on the check or money order, that it is made payable to UC Regents, and that it is accompanied by the check/money order submission form found on the last page of the application or on the Application Status Page. International applicants paying by check or money order must send an International Money Order or a check drawn on a US bank in US funds. Do not send cash. An application fee paid to another University of California campus is not valid for an application to UCSB.

Application fees are not refundable under any circumstance.

For information on Fee Waivers see Application Components.

Departmental Deadlines

Please consult with your prospective academic department regarding application requirements, eligibility, and deadlines. To be considered a complete application, ALL supporting documents -- including the application fee -- must be received by the deadline (or the next working day, if it falls on a weekend or holiday). Receiving payments postmarked on or by the deadline is not acceptable. Very competitive departments may close their programs earlier than the published deadline for lack of space. Application deadlines are subject to change.

For specific deadlines, see Summary of Departmental Information.

Application Status

After you have completed your application, you may return to and view your Application Status Page. To view your status, use the same email and password created when you submitted your online application. The Application Status Page provides a live glimpse at the status of your application, including when we have received your application fee and supplemental materials. If you have elected to pay by check or money order and we have not yet received and processed it, you will be able to retrieve a copy of the Check/Money Order Submission form. Additionally, admitted applicants are able to return their Statement of Intent to Register online via the Application Status Page.

International Applications

International applicants may be required to submit a Pre-Application before completing the graduate application. For a list of those departments which require the Pre-Application, please see Departments and Programs.

Supplemental Materials

Once you begin your graduate application, you will see a checklist for most required mail-in materials under the "requirements" section. Additional materials are often required by your prosposed academic departments, so be sure to consult their web site.

We also provide PDF versions of the Statement of Purpose and Letters of Recommendation cover sheets.

Admissions Assistance

All inquiries regarding the submission of your graduate application and the admissions process should be directed to your prospective graduate department or program. Departmental contact information can be found in the Departments and Programs directory.
