Students can self-nominate with a faculty letter of support.

Faculty, staff, and graduate students may also nominate a student for the 2024 Commencement Student Speaker. 

The deadline for nominations has passed.

All faculty letters of support and nomination materials must be submitted to graddeans@graddiv.ucsb.edu. Please include "Commencement Speaker Nomination" in the subject line of your email.

Competition Requirements 

Students who have completed, or will complete, a graduate degree or credential between Summer Session 2023 and Fall quarter 2024 are invited to participate.

  • By faculty, staff, student, or self-nomination
  • Every submission requires at least ONE faculty letter of support
  • Application Form 
  • Statement of Interest*
  • Biographical Sketch (100 words)
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • At least one faculty letter of support that addresses your ability to serve as the student speaker at the 2023 Graduate Division Commencement 
  • The faculty letter must be sent or emailed directly from the faculty member to the Graduate Division

* Your statement of interest must articulate why you would like to be the student speaker and what you would like to talk about in your address. The statement should include: what qualities you possess that make you a strong candidate to be the Commencement speaker (describe any previous experience addressing large audiences); describe experiences serving the University or larger community; overcoming economic and/or social disadvantage(s) in pursuing your academic objectives; and/or securing academic honors or awards indicative of your commitment to academic excellence. Also, describe your current or future employment plans.  

The selection of student speaker finalists is based on the materials submitted (statement of interest, biographical sketch, CV, and faculty letters of support). The final selection process may include a mock presentation by each finalist to the Graduate Division staff.
